    There's a sense of the primordial in Wlodzimierz Staniewski's striking musical evocation of the ancient Greeks.

    Part song, with a hint of opera, part twirling dance, and a great deal of primitive drama. The actors sometimes seem to be Polish peasants with twisted faces, or they are wrapped in white togas, or bear crowns of thorns, or exhibit a tail and a "hee haw."
