Walter John NatynczykOC CMM MSC CD^[3] (nə-TIN-chik; born October 29, 1957)^[4] is a Canadian public servant and retired Canadian Armygeneral who has served as Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs from 2014 to 2021.^[5][6] He was the President of the Canadian Space Agency from 2013 to 2014 and Chief of the Defence Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces from 2008 to 2012.

Early life

Both Polish-Canadian and German-Canadian, Natynczyk was born to a family of European emigrants from war-ravaged Europe on October 29, 1957, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.^[7] His Polish father was a soldier in the Polish Army during World War II,^[4] and his mother was German.^[4] Natynczyk grew up with his two sisters.
